The Prince's Bodyguard Page 8
Cheers and applause sounded around us,
Xavier rested his forehead against mine. “We did it, my prince. We are married.”
I grinned. “We did. There’s no getting rid of me now,” I said.
He laughed. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

Xavier
Eight and Half Months Later
I closed down my laptop and filed it away in my desk, locking the drawer. I had expected to be done with the Guard once Iain and I were married, but alas, the Guard was not done with me.
Though I wasn’t assigned to protect the royal family anymore, and I actually had my own guard detail when Iain and I made public appearances, I was offered a role working on schedule coordination and training within the Royal Guard. Iain was more than happy to have me do something besides follow him around all day, so I accepted.
As of two minutes ago though, I was on paternity leave.
Iain’s due date was today and he was more than ready.
The only reason I hadn’t started my leave earlier was because he didn’t like having me around. I liked to tend to his every need when I was near him, but he called it hovering and as the days got longer and his stomach larger, he begged me to stay away.
My phone let out a loud ring just as I reached my office door. “Hello?” I answered.
“Come to the birthing suite.” Iain’s voice was strained and there was a lot of background noise.
“Right now? You’re having the baby right now?”
“Yes. My water broke when I tried to get off the couch. And now we have to get a new couch. There was so much. No one told me how much there would be.” His voice turned into more of a wail. “Xavier. Get here now!”
“I’m on my way. Don’t—don’t have the baby without me.”
I stuffed my phone in my pocket and took off. The birthing suite was on the first floor, in the east wing. The opposite of where I was now in the palace. Generally, one didn’t ever run through the palace, unless there was an emergency. Though, I supposed I should get a pass this time, because it was an emergency to me. I was not missing my child’s birth.
I made it there in record time. I only knocked over one person, after that I shouted for everyone to move out of my way.
I burst into the room, searching for my omega. “Iain?”
Iain lay on the bed, that while it was a hospital bed, didn’t look anything like one. The room itself looked like any other room in the palace, but there was a monitor and IV hooked up to my omega, and a doctor in a white coat at his side.
“How are you? Do you hurt?”
He grimaced and held his protruding stomach. “Only when there’s a contraction. Which is like, ever thirty seconds now.”
“Thirty seconds!”
The doctor chuckled. “That’s a slight exaggeration, but it is a good thing you’re here, he is progressing very fast.”
“Is that bad?” I stood next to the bed and gripped my omega’s hand. I brought his knuckles to my lips and kissed them.
“No, it is all perfectly normal. I’m going to gather the nursing staff and alert his majesties that we’ll be moving into active labor soon.”
“Who’s this ‘we’? I’m the only one pushing out a baby today!” Iain clamped a hand over his mouth. “Sorry! I’m not usually so—” He let out a screech as his grip tightened on my hand.
The doctor left the room quickly.
“Just breath, love. Our child will be here soon and the hard part is almost over.”
He smiled at me through the tears that pooled in the corner of his eyes. Sweat beaded on his forehead. “We’re going to be dads. The past nine month… it went by so quick. Are we prepared for this? Are we sure we know what we’re doing?”
I brushed his sweat off his forehead and met his gaze. “Of course we don’t know what we’re doing. No parents know, not on the first day. But together, we can handle it. I love you my prince. You’re going to make an amazing dad.”
He lifted his head and kissed me quickly. “Thank you, Xavier. You always know just what to say.” His grip tightened again and he arched off the bed. “Oh shit! This is a big one.”
The doctor entered the room trailed by several nurses and a photographer.
“All right then, shall we?”
“Please! Fuck! Get this baby out! And please don’t tell the press I swore in the delivery room! Gawd, I was going to have it way more together than this.”
The nurse patted his shoulder. “Don’t you worry, Your Highness, Wendell cursed quite a bit when it was his turn. And I have it on good authority that your omega father said his fair share of bad words while in this room.”
Iain sighed. “Oh, thank goodness.”
I kissed his forehead. “Let’s meet our child.”
***
In the end, Iain said a lot more than just the F word. He was respectful to our nurse and doctor, but that didn’t stop him from shouting out curses that made me blush.
But it was all worth it. Even he said so, right before he passed out from exhaustion. He took one long look at our daughter and held her for a moment before his eyes drifted closed and he fell right to sleep.
It scared the hell out of me, but the doctor assured me it was normal.
I held our daughter in my arms, pacing the hospital room for the past hour while Iain slept.
It wasn’t protocol, but I wasn’t allowing the king or Iain’s brothers into the room until Iain got his rest and a better look at his daughter. He deserved that at least.
“Xavier?” Iain called out.
“I’m here,” I said. I pulled the rocking chair over until it was next to the bed.
“Did I fall asleep?”
“Yes.”
“Where’s—”
“She’s here,” I said. I transferred her to Iain’s waiting arms. “This is your daughter. She is quiet as a mouse, but I’m sure she’ll make her voice heard when she needs something.
Our daughter was wrapped in the royal colors of Swena, a deep maroon blanket with gold satin trim. Her eyes opened wide as Iain held her.
“She recognizes her daddy,” I said.
“Yeah,” Iain cooed. “Aren’t you an amazing princess, already?”
I kissed Ian’s forehead, watching him as he watched our daughter. “You’re amazing, my prince,” I said.
He snuggled against me. “You’re pretty amazing yourself, love.”
